Summary of February 3, 2004 Zoning Hearing Board Meeting

Note: The following is not a verbatim transcript of the Zoning Hearing Board meeting; it is simply one person’s summary of the major points made by those involved in the hearing process.  For that reason, quotation marks are not used unless a direct quote was recorded.  For information about obtaining an official ZHB transcript, contact the New Hanover Township office.

The meeting continued with township attorney Julie Von Spreckelsen presenting her witness Dr. David Gold, Economic Geologist.

During direct testimony Dr. Gold mentioned that the cycle time for trucks to move in and out of the quarry would be about every fifteen minutes.

He also summarized by saying that the figures in the GRI plan suggest a much larger quarry than the one proposed (leading many of us to believe that GRI has all along planned to get any quarry in and then come back in a year or two and ask for continuous increases in the size of the quarry.)

Ms. Von Spreckelsen concluded her witness and Mr. Stephen Harris, attorney for Gibraltar Rock began his cross-examination.

Harris spent the next hour asking questions to poke holes in Dr. Gold’s testimony. He indicated that he found some errors in numbers and some things that Gold did not take into account.  For example, he wanted Gold to explain where he (Gold) would put the overburden in his plan.

Harris will continue his cross-examination on March 3, 2005.
