Summary of April 1, 2004 Zoning Hearing Board Meeting
 
 

Note: The following is not a verbatim transcript of the Zoning Hearing Board meeting; it is simply one person’s summary of the major points made by those involved in the hearing process.  For that reason, quotation marks are not used unless a direct quote was recorded.  For information about obtaining an official ZHB transcript, contact the New Hanover Township office.

This meeting was the first where those with party status were allowed to address the zoning hearing board with regard to issues concerning the proposed quarry. There are approximately 125 people with party status. In alphabetical order they were allowed to speak.

Dr. Charles Amuso, Superintendent of Boyertown Area School District
Concerned about traffic. Requested another study. Concerned about noise, dust, and water supply---The New Hanover Elementary school is on a well.

Leroy Brendlinger
Concerned about emissions, property value.

Roger Buchanan
Made a motion to allow people who have moved into New Hanover since party status was established (March 2001) to be allowed party status. – Accepted

Made a motion to allow residents who never signed up for party status, but would like to be allowed to speak. – Accepted

Made a motion to allow people who are advocates or spokespersons for residents who are ill, shut-in, or who have power of attorney. – Accepted on a case-by-case basis.

Made a motion to allow parents, teachers, and grandparents of students who attend New Hanover Elementary School or PVA to speak. – Accepted

Made a motion to allow residents of neighboring townships (Douglas and Upper Frederick) who have an interest  – Accepted

Made a motion to allow local organizations like the Paradise Watchdogs, Historical Society, etc to be allowed party status. – Denied

Made a motion to allow representatives of local, state, or national environmental or health organizations to be allowed party status. – Accepted on a case-by-case basis.

Mr. Buchanan talked about issues relating to air quality.

James Butler
Concerned about his 200 year-old stone house, radon gas, family safety, asphalt fumes, dust, condition of the roads, quality of the water, blasting, noise, and dust and water run-off.

Raymond Ginkiewicz
Quarries in general.

Robert Kulp
Geology Degree. Explained the area and was concerned with water and silica. Very impassioned.

The meeting will continue with on May 6th beginning with Mr. J. Kuniewicz.

The next GR 1 meeting is May 6, 2004 at the New Hanover Township Building, 7:00 PM.
