Why Two Applications? (GR 1 and GR 2)

In January, John and Larry Silvi, owners of Gibraltar Rock, Inc. (GRI) announced that they purchased an additional 22 acres boarding the original 163 acres and about 50 acres purchased over the last year.  They now own approximately 235 acres.

GRI tried to include this additional acreage under their original zoning application.  In effect, they tried to say that the additional acres would not change what their witnesses had already said during the last two years of testimony---New Hanover Township disagreed---the zoning officer requested that they file a new application, which they did.

Bob Brant, attorney for New Hanover Township objected to these new 22 acres because it provides enough space for a second quarry pit.

Needless to say, this really complicates things. The New Hanover Zoning Board decided to hold a new series of meeting to discuss this new phase. The first of these new meetings (identified as GR 2 on this Web site) was held March 19, 2003. See our homepage for the date of the next meeting for GR 1 and GR 2.

IMPORTANT: One thing I did learn is that if you originally signed up to be allowed to question witnesses you must do it again for this new hearing.

Let us know if you have other questions we might answer, and thanks for your continued support. We'll try to keep you updated.
